What is the VHS look?

Home video camcorders arrived in many households in the mid-1980s. Their tapes recorded at low resolution with limited color, and every playback added wear. The result is a look that is soft, smeared and warm, with glitches that feel like memories.

The technical quirks behind it

Our VHS Home Video style recreates these artifacts carefully so they look natural rather than like a cheap overlay.

Chroma bleed: color information was recorded at a lower resolution than brightness, so colors smear beyond edges.
Tracking lines: small misalignments between tape and heads create rolling bands of noise.
Soft detail: roughly 240 lines of resolution, far below modern video.
Date stamps: many camcorders burned the date and time into the picture in bright orange or white digits.
